Rahu is the debut release by Sharada Shashidhar on Leaving Records. Shashidhar, a lifelong vocalist and musician, is currently pursuing a degree in jazz voice. The songs on Rahu were recorded over the last four years between Los Angeles and New York, in a constant collaborative exchange with rising producer and Stones Throw Records artist Jamael Dean.

The music of Rahu is arresting, an unforgettable introduction to Sharada’s compelling voice and songwriting. Her elaborate harmonies and vocal creativity come together in brief yet powerful songs that explore universal themes of inner and outer exploration.

Opening track “Messages” sets the contemplative yet focused tone of Rahu. Sharada says, “There were a lot of things that were being told to me, new things, things that I realized through experience that I just wanted to write down. And I would say that is kind of consistent with a lot of my songs. I kind of take on this alter ego … somebody who knows a lot more than me. That tells me what’s up sometimes. Just communicating with myself, communicating with my past and present and future self … kind of knowing through experience, passing that knowledge on, forward, upward.”

“Rotate” is one of Rahu’s most uplifting tracks, a futuristic and soulful paean inspired by an impactful stay at an Ayurvedic center in India. Sharada says, “I was very appreciative of being there. It was just so beautiful … kind of very remote and removed from everything. They had their own farm, growing things themselves, and they were just some of the most loving people I had ever met.”

Album closer “Vexed” marries a frantic, glitchy piano with soul searching lyrics. Sharada states, “it was just about dealing with people, how to kind of see past our differences and come to a common ground. And kind of transcend the physical bodies that we have and be more in tune with the interconnectedness of everyone and everything.”
Forever grateful to my family and those who have been with me on my journey in self-discovery. Thank you Jamael for helping to bring this music beauty, life, and perspective.
I thank all creation al well as Rahu, who’s energy inspired clarity adn light within the darkness.
May our intellects be illuminated!
