Piping hot, fresh out the Leaving Records experimental pressure cooker, drenched in community and sunlight and joy, In Float (out December 8th 2023) is a mostly all-live collaboration between two ‘Genre’ wunderkinder: Lionmilk and Club Diego. A portion of the tracks that comprise In Float were recorded at a Floating event in at the Friendship Garden and Japanese Tea House in Brand Park, Los Angeles (Floating, for the uninitiated, being the Los Angeles-based guerilla-event-series-cum-art-collective what frequently partners with Leaving), with minimal interventions and overdubs added at home. The result is an infectious and brisk (its runtime clocks in at the appropriately vibey and numerologically loaded 33:13) jaunt through the flourishing expanses of a thing/time/place we might coyly call Los Angelectronica.
Both Lionmilk and Club Diego have been busy of late. Lionmilk’s self-soothing sci-fi opus, Intergalactic Warp Terminal 222, dropped in March 2023 (also courtesy of Leaving), while Club Diego self-released This Could Be Our Every Day (brimming with absolute crooners) in November, mere weeks before the world would learn of his contributions to Andre 3000’s instant classic, New Blue Sun. The energy captured on In Float is undoubtedly that produced by two young artists in their creative stride. Throughout their respective discographies, both projects tend to marry a rhythmic urgency (that is: danceability) with gentleness, often elegant melodic phrasing. This formula holds true and steady and strong on their collaboration. Whether it be the comparatively moody (think rain-driving) “collisboys” or the trance-like come-up of “don’t worry make mistakes part 2,” In Float offers, in equal measure, compassion, play, solace, and movement.
