“Serenity” centers the active processes at play in the process of healing. During the first summer of the pandemic, I was grieving the loss of my uncle to alcoholism while participating in support groups that promoted the “Serenity Prayer.” “Serenity” is a queering of that sentiment that invites my indigenous ancestors, Buddhist ideas of non-attachment, butterflies and dragonflies as talismans for our collective healing.

How fleeting, serenity

Don’t be attached as it falls away

I watch it turn as it flies away
Like a butterfly
Don’t be attached to serenity
It turns and it crumbles
A broken leaf in the waterfall

How nice it feels to watch it fall apart
Serenity, and then it floats away

Dive in

I move with the wind
Listening to humankind
A dragonfly above the water
Connected to my mother
Whispered memories of distant time
And ancestral cries
Butterflies fly
