The 55-minute record is the new work from Roxanne Harris "alsoknownasrox," who calls sound into being through extended live improvisation with code. Built from a 160 BPM continuum, pace shifts within and between ten compositions as density and weight move across the grid. Tightly articulated percussion, sustained bass pressure, and layers of synthesized and recorded material take shape through notation Harris writes and rewrites as it executes.
Harris modulates conditional logic while making unquantized moves against the underlying pulse. Recurrence lives in the interval between returns, where memory makes difference perceptible. Each return becomes a landmark, with traces of earlier states remaining audible as new ones accumulate. She churns this recursion until familiar sonic associations lose their pull, driving the music toward escape velocity and unfamiliar terrain. Harris describes this mode of thinking as runtime thought: an intention takes form as notation, executes as sound, and feeds back through listening to inform another decision. longform needs duration for material to coalesce and change, reconfiguring what came before.
Harris composes some recordings directly in source code. For others, she uses a custom event-timeline system to preserve the timing and sequence of earlier edits and replay them in later performances. This lets her return to those moments with their timing and logic intact. She crystallizes the resulting live sessions through arrangement and mixing while retaining overtones of their emergence.
Each composition takes an avian name inspired by its timbral character and evolution. longform fixes one realization of a practice in motion.
All music by Roxanne Harris
